Tamil food is Easy

From idli sambar to chicken and mutton biryani we have done it all! I am glad you found the right place for spicy, tasty, delicious, and hot South Indian recipes. I cook Tamil recipes for breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner almost everyday. For 28 years my husband, two daughters, family and friends have enjoyed my tamil food over and over again.

Mother’s cooking

People have traditionally loved their mother’s cooking. It is not that every mother is the best cook in the world. To most children, yes mother’s are the best. Our taste buds have been trained from childhood to appreciate certain flavors and foods. More so with Tamil cooking.

My husband(like most husbands) loves his mother’s recipes. I learned most of them. I cook his mother’s madurai Indian Tamil recipe very often. It brings him enormous pleasure. This in turn brings great dividends your way. You have made him happy! This is one of the best kept secrets of a happy marriage. If you have not tried yet, give it a go!!

Patience and Practice

Cooking is learned by practice. Just be patient and persevere and you will become a great cook soon. It does not really take many years. Just keep working at it.

An impressive share, I just given this onto a colleague who was doing a little analysis on this. And he in fact bought me breakfast because I found it for him.. smile. So let me reword that: Thnx for the treat! But yeah Thnkx for spending the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love reading more on this topic. If possible, as you become expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more details? It is highly helpful for me. Big thumb up for this blog post!

Several places you mention putting rice in a pressure cooker and cooking five minutes on high then five minutes on low without the weight. Do you not put the weight on at any time? Or do you have it on during the high heat then take it off for the low heat? We just came back from Tamil Nadu and Kerala and loved the cooking. We were looking for a site which could help us capture the flavor of our time there and we love this site.

    Thanks so much

    • Shirley Fenn on July 4, 2011 at 8:48 am

      Dear Gordon,

Sorry for the confusion. Yes, You do not use the weight at all for any rice recipe if Briyani rice is used. If you use long grain or another non briyani rice then you may have to use the weight.

Thanks and appreciate your comment that you like the site.

    Hi Shirley,,,,

Appreciate the efforts. Good Job done.
Could you please help me with some simple, easy, less fatty recipes for breakfast and lunch which could be prepared in minimum time for office going women?

    • Shirley Fenn on August 11, 2011 at 4:29 pm

hi, the simple breakfast you requested is probably uppuma or pongal which less fatty. Under rice you can make curd rice, lime rice or taamarind rice for lunch. these are simple easy and less fatty.

I’m having 2 yrs old baby, she is hesitating to eat food., i think she won’t like my prearation,.tell me some dishes for child that eat most., and preparatory method.,,,

    • Shirley Fenn on December 24, 2011 at 9:16 am

      Dear Manju,

A two year old should be eating well. Did you consult your Dr to see why she has no appetite? She may even have some form of worms. But if she is otherwise healthy she will eat. Potato is good at this stage. Boil and mash potato well with little salt and ghee or butter. Taste it yourself and see you like it first, then feed her little bit at a time, Rice, ghee with paruppu with little salt is delicious and she should like it. Make the rice really cooked (nalla kolancha sadham). All items have to be warm, not too hot nor cold.

I am not sure you are vegetarian or not, if you are not then you can try just a little bit of minced (ground) meat with rice as well. You have to try a variety of dishes to see what she likes. Usually children do not like vegetables much you have to mash them and mix them in rice to start with. MIlk and Curd rice with just the right amount of salt is the most common, but have a variety to see what she likes. 1 Boiled and mashed egg with salt is good.

Feed only a little at a time, if she does not want it do not force, see if she eats after some time. You have to find out as a mother whether it is the preparation she does not like or she is not hungry at all. If not hungry consult a doctor immediately..

Freezing leftovers is a great way to eat healthy and to save money, too. Buy foods like onions in season and dry to preserve for the entire year.
